About Us

Jane Stam, the owner of the Raspberry Ridge property built her backyard clay tennis court in 1990. She had always dreamed of having a Christian tennis camp. Mary Frances Boyce and Nancy Brooks, both successful Suzuki string teachers, had often thought of starting a Christian camp for young string players in the Chapel Hill area. Chip and Doris Stam had just moved to town and were eager to offer their teaching experience, their love of music, and their interest in integrating authentic Christian faith and artistic expression. In August of 2000, Chip Stam moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he serves as Director of the Institute for Christian Worship and associate professor in the School of Church Music and Worship at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

So in the Spring of 1992, Chip's first year as the minister of worship and music at the Chapel Hill Bible Church, these five brave souls decided to establish Raspberry Ridge: The Chapel Hill String Camp (named for violin strings and tennis strings). Thus it began---a day camp that included orchestra and chorus for everyone in the 140-year-old barn, chamber music and music theory classes in the house, tennis instruction, small-group Bible study after lunch, and ample time for food, fun and friendship. This year, 2007, marks the sixteenth anniversary of the camp and the thirteenth year that we have offered Raspberry Ridge Junior, a shorter camp experience for younger campers. Raspberry Ridge is the ideal environment for developing musicians.
